Overview

Dubai is a vibrant city in the United Arab Emirates that has transformed from a modest fishing and pearl-diving settlement into a global symbol of innovation and luxury. Today, it stands as a cosmopolitan metropolis known for its iconic skyline—dominated by landmarks like the Burj Khalifa—and expansive shopping malls, ultramodern architecture, artificial islands, and world-class entertainment. Serving as a major center for trade, tourism, aviation, finance, and real estate, Dubai attracts visitors worldwide and continues to grow through strategic urban planning and economic diversification

Dubai, located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Gulf, began as a small fishing and pearl-diving settlement in the eighteenth century and remained a modest village until it was declared a free port in the early twentieth century, which encouraged active trade around Dubai Creek and the growth of Deira’s marketplace. The city underwent a major transformation after the discovery of oil in 1966, as oil revenues paved the way for large-scale development including the establishment of vital infrastructure such as Dubai International Airport, Jebel Ali Port, and the Al Maktoum Bridge. During the 1990s and 2000s, the economy diversified to include finance, tourism, real estate, and trade, turning Dubai into a global business hub with the Dubai International Financial Centre emerging as one of the most important international financial centers. Today, Dubai is renowned for its striking skyline featuring the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, as well as ambitious projects like Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Mall, in addition to an advanced transportation network that includes the fully automated Dubai Metro, the first of its kind in the region. In terms of economy and tourism, Dubai ranked seventh globally for visitor numbers in 2024, while its international airport welcomed more than ninety-two million passengers, confirming its status as a vibrant world city that is advanced in economic diversification and future-oriented planning with a vision for sustainability and global appeal.
